A Creative Space

I’ve spent the last few months focusing on my painting. I studied Fine Art and History of Art, and for many years, I neglected my paintbrushes – too many commitments, distractions, excuses, etc. Then I reached 50 and thought, if not now, when?

It’s been a joy to paint again and to be in a creative space. I’ve experimented with different styles and techniques, set myself small painting challenges, connected with fellow artists, and visited galleries and exhibitions. A few favourites were Louise Bourgeois at Compton Verney, Carol Douglas at The Table in Hay-on-Wye, and Belkis Ayón at Modern Art Oxford.

I paint abstract and semi-abstract artworks in oil and acrylic, often choosing a calming colour palette of green, blue, turquoise, and grey. My inspiration mostly comes from the natural world – the colour, light, tone, texture, and movement. I’m also inspired by minimalism, abstract expressionism (especially Mark Rothko), impressionism, and mid-century modern design.

As we approach the winter solstice, I’ve stored away my paintbrushes until next year. It’s cold and dark here in Oxford, so I’ve been slowing down to reflect on the year and take a break after a challenging season. My intention for 2025 (how is it 2025 already?) is to build up a small collection of paintings. I have a rough plan to get me started and will allow each painting to evolve organically and spontaneously. It’s like planting a seed and watching it grow.

I’m grateful for the time I’ve had. It’s only taken me 28 years to return to where I started, the beautifully rounded journey of life.

Thank you for visiting – season’s greetings and best wishes for the New Year.

If you’d like to keep in touch, I have a mailing list on Substack and occasionally share photos on Instagram.
